Against the Ground
Over the river for some lemonade
A two for one stand in suburbia
A brand new home because you made the grade
An American dream in Peoria
Knowing the past how far you have come
But still you have scars where your skin’s gone numb
Just look, you’re an open book
When you only want to breathe
From the hatred you receive
And you think you’ve had enough (You tell yourself that)
The best you can achieve
Is all that you believe
It keeps you hanging tough
Against the ground. Against the ground
Under shady trees running down the lane
Mowing the lawn you forget the pain
So true, in a life so new
As a soldier of this land
You try to understand
There’s peace love and art (You tell yourself that)
For the struggles that we face
We’re a growing human race
Still mysteries to chart
Against the ground. Against the ground
